What is a Psychic Change?

 “unless this person can experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of his recovery.

On the other hand,…once a psychic change has occurred, the very same person who seemed doomed…

suddenly finds himself easily able to control his desire for alcohol, the only effort necessary being that required to follow a few simple rules.”

The Doctor’s Opinion, Big Book of AA >>

“Medieval Christianity called it the dark night of the soul;

Dante called the journey through hell and purgatory;

it was forty days and forty nights in the desert for Jesus;

it was the journey in the belly of the fish for many a hero.”

—Robert Johnson

Addiction is a Spiritual Disease >>

We were morally bankrupt.  Our lives had become filled with lies, deceit, and controlling behavior.  We neglected our responsibilities, ignored the consequences of our actions, and gave up what morals we had left to serve the god of our addiction.  We were filled with guilt, shame, and despair.

Our addiction was killing us

Our using produced a psychic change but not a good one.  After a few hits, we were amazed at the change in how we thought felt.  We didn’t regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.  We comprehended the word serenity and knew peace.  Our whole attitude and outlook upon life changed.  It was our solution for living.  But it was killing us.

Only a Spiritual Answer will work >>

Psyche” is the Greek word for “soul.”   If we can heal the sickness of the soul, the mind and the body will follow.  But without this deep-seated change, abstinence is useless.  We must go from lies to truth, from pain to joy, from moral bankruptcy to true integrity.

Soul-surgeons >>

The early members of the Oxford Group were known to call themselves “soul-surgeons.”  They believed their task was to help a person remove everything which separated them from their Higher Power.  Thus, we are given the task of replacing the god of our addiction with a God of our own understanding who can deliver us from our suffering.

The problem is our ego >>

Our egos separated us from our spiritual center.  Our job then is to realign ourselves with a Higher Power that can guide us in life.  To do this, we must free ourselves of the wreckage of the past.  We must jettison our old lethal ideas.

We must dethrone our ego >>

with its false ideas about life.  Unfortunately, the ego will not give up its supremacy without a fierce struggle.  It is a fight to the death, but it is the fight every person must undergo eventually.  For us, it is the pain which drives us forward.

This is the inner shift, the overthrow of the ego >>

It is the movement from self to Higher Power.  It is the complete rearrangement of the soul.  It is the inner death of the old person and the rebirth of a healthy soul.  This is the psychic change.

A deep and effective spiritual experience >>

Rarely, a person will undergo a “white light” experience that shows them the way they need to go.  But the hard work, the “action,” is the working of the Steps, which everyone must do.  Just going to meetings won’t do it.

A spiritual awakening is a process, not an event >>

As the drugs clear from my system, and just to the extent that I can tame my own ego and quell my fear and doubt, will I succeed.  The process is continuous, each day bringing a fuller understanding of my place in the universe and a deeper relationship with my Higher Power.

The psychic change must be complete and overwhelming >>

We are talking about a total change in direction in our thinking and our behavior.  Our long-neglected spirituality, one definition of our relationship with God, will become functional.  We will practice these principles in all our affairs.  Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier that it sounds.  And it feels good.
